Marcie, you look like a little girl, but A.S. looked like a hooker.

As I watched the election results, many things came to mind. The years of living in a household where I was taught to believe that anything is possible if you believe. That we are the descendants of kings and queens and we must be preparing ourselves to rule a nation. The stories of my ancestors and their struggles and hardships to survive in the South. How my father sold berries on the side of the road to feed his family. My role models were my mother and grandmother. The mornings of waking up to find the National guards lining the streets as a teenager, the first time I marched for freedom just to be me and the first I was able to vote. Pulling a wagon of food in the blizzard to feed elders who were snowed in, at the instruction of another wonderful woman Nancy Jefferson. The years on Olive Harvey College Campus in the seventies, student government, the first legal defense fund, the first African-American Student conference held by students, and a student ran summer camp. The election of the first African- American did not seem impossible to me, but I’m glad I was able to see it in my lifetime. I hope we as a people are preparing ourselves to show how brilliant and capable we are. That we are ready to do the things necessary to survive the storm that’s coming without complaints and negativity. That we remember we are a spiritual people and that’s what will get us through if we keep the faith in God and who we are and not how others define us.
