In life, we prepare to go to work.  We prepare to get a job.  We prepare to go out with our friends.  But there are some things that we are just not prepared for – a sudden illness, an instant death, or the stories of teens living in this mean, cruel world.

I had four girls in my group this past weekend and nothing could have prepared me for our conversation on Saturday, July 19th at approximately 9:05 a.m.  Keep in mind that the program creates an atmosphere of trust so any topic of conversation can come up at any time.

One of the little angels shared that she was sexually abused by her step-father in the past and he is still living in the home.  So, I couldn’t get past the fact that he was still alive, let alone in the house.  She said that she was sexually abused as a child by her cousin, more recently by her stepfather, and her ex-boyfriend.  After sharing all of that information, she said, “I’m OK.”

She is NOT ok.  I cannot imagine how she really feels.  Her mother knows what the stepfather did, but told the young lady that she (mom) was getting older.  I’m assuming that she meant that she did not want to be alone.  Mom also told the young lady that she only has a little over a year to deal with it before she leaves for college.  WHAT????  The little lady  stays in her room with the door locked when Mom leaves for work at night.  But she did confirm that it has not happened recently.  Although I don’t know what “recently” means in this case.

The young lady said that “they” told her that the spirit of sex was on her stepfather when he touched her, and a spirit of sex was on her when her boyfriend took liberties with her.  I told her that she has done nothing to receive the treatment she has received and anything that happened to her was NOT her fault.  Prayerfully, there was a poster in our room that offered help with a phone number.  I gave it to her and she promised she would use it.   I told her that I would bring her home with me if I could.  Now, you know that was serious!

Oh, I forgot to mention.  Her step-father is now a pastor and she has to attend the church to listen to his hypocrisy.  So, that’s the ultimate slap in the face.  But please pray for this young lady.  I am not a counselor or anything, but I really feel that she is going to pop because of all of the pressures.

I experienced my second most blessed experience of the 2008 this past weekend.  I went to St. Louis to coach teens in writing their personal essays for their college applications with College Summit.  It was beautiful.

The students that participate in the program are “average” in school.  They either have a low GPA or a low ACT score; sometimes they have both.  Most of them come from low-income families in overly-negative environments , and college is just possibility.  College Summit tries to turn this possibility into a reality.  The program is also a life changing experience for most of these youngsters.  You can literally see changes in these young people from their arrival on Thursday to their departure on Sunday.  It was great and I’m glad that I was a part of it.

As much as I enjoyed the students in St. Louie, I’m going to try to get to Berkeley in Cali or Yale.  Anybody care to join me????
