Schedule

Where: Downtown at Columbia College ( Wabash and Congress), Room C-213

When:10 a.m.-2 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday from June 30, 2009 to Aug. 4, 2009, with a graduation at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 20, 2009. Additional time will be required to work with mentors on story assignments. A stipend of $200 and a certificate will be awarded to each student at the successful completion of this program.

The Columbia Links program plans a Green in the City focus for a special five-week intensive reporting academy, including walking field trips to the nearby Field Museum and site visits to neighborhoods experiencing the effects of pollution and other environmental hazards.

Students will examine such issues as climate change, health dangers of unsafe water, air and food, and invasive species and pollutants in Lake Michigan . We will explore solutions, meeting with city officials and community activists about green roofs, food deserts, healthy urban gardening and low-cost meal planning. We will introduce students to the concept of environmental racism and use Internet mapping tools to see where industrial pollutants are the worst in Chicago . The students? reports on these issues and others will be presented in a multi-media web publication.
Our journalism academy will recruit motivated students and pay them
stipends for learning to report on and write stories on environmental subjects. In addition to reporting, we will teach multimedia skills using Flip video and still digital cameras and audio recorders. We are collaborating in this program with the Little Village Environmental Justice Organization (LVEJO) and the Southwest Youth Collaborative. Professional journalists will serve as mentors to the teen participants..
