I went to the Universoul Circus today and enjoyed the show minus the mime performance to gospel music.  It’s not that I didn’t appreciate it.  I feel that it should have been placed elsewhere in the show with a different song selection.

The circus is very unique with the most recent hip hop tunes to keep the young people engaged (not good for MY ears.  At least the kids had a good time) with a blend of old skool tunes.  The diversity of the performers was awesome.  People from China, Moscow, New Zealand, South Africa, West Africa, Trinidad showed their talents.

The audience participation was great.  Beach balls were thrown around the tent; 10 adults over 25 years old shook their booties in a Universoul soul train line; three young ladies represented in a dance contest; and that’s all I can remember for now.

I truly loved Noah’s Ark where the 2 camels, 2 llamas, 1 zebra and 2 little ponies came out.  The elephants were cool and the tigers were interesting.  I do think, however, that a bigger ring is needed.  Even though they kept the animals at a minimum, more space is needed.  Well, that’s how it looked from where I sat.

The Ringmaster, Andre McLean, was great with his sidekick Zeke.  He was very engaging, and has a great speaking voice.  Zeke is funny and equally engaging.

It’s amazing how people can train animals.  The horses kept running while the performers jumped on and off.  The elephants were actually dancing!  If they weren’t so big, I would consider one for a pet.  I wouldn’t mind a little pony either.  But, anything that cannot feed itself cannot stay with me. :)

I had a couple thoughts as I watched the show.  1) How much are circus performers paid?  and 2) How much are pooper scoopers paid?

One last thing.  Universoul is celebrating 15 years this year.  The circus will be in Chicago through October 14, 2008.  Try to get there if you can.

It was a good time overall.
